Why Foundation First Exists

Most organizations promote strong performers into management roles without preparation.

Then expect them to figure it out.

Foundation First was built to address that gap.

The Problem I've Seen on Repeat

Foundation First is the program I wish had existed for them … and for me.

I created Foundation First after watching too many talented professionals struggle — not because they lacked capability, but because no one told them what the role actually required.

I was that person once: promoted to manager and expected to figure it out.

Later, as a CFO and HR executive, I saw the pattern repeat:

  • Strong performers promoted into management

  • Left to navigate the transition alone

  • Often at significant personal and organizational cost

The peer-to-manager transition is especially difficult.

You're suddenly responsible for evaluating, directing, and sometimes correcting people who were your colleagues yesterday.

Social relationships pre-date positional authority.

No one tells you how to renegotiate those relationships.
No one explains what actually changes when you become a manager.
No one prepares you for the role itself.

Organizations assume you'll figure it out.

Some do. Many don't.

The cost is real: turnover, disengagement, preventable conflict, and managers who doubt themselves constantly.

Who I Am

Shelley Lewis-Mercier, CPA, MBA (HR), Former CFO, Former Senior HR Executive, ICF-Certified Coach

Shelley Lewis-Mercier, CPA, MBA, ICF-Certified Coach

Professional Background:

  • 30+ years leading finance and HR teams

  • Former Chief Financial Officer

  • Former Senior HR Executive

  • Led finance departments, managed controllers, and built human resources programs

Most leadership trainers have never:

  • Managed a finance team through fiscal year-end

  • Sat in the CFO seat making decisions that affect people's livelihoods

  • Led HR functions and seen firsthand what happens when managers aren't prepared

I've done all three.

Foundation First reflects that dual perspective:

  • The accountability of executive leadership

  • The reality of front-line management in finance and accounting

  • The HR perspective on what poor management actually costs organizations

  • The coaching perspective on how individuals develop through transitions

The understanding that management is a profession requiring preparation, not just promotion

What Foundation First Believes

Management is a profession. Not a promotion side-effect.

Too many organizations treat management as an automatic next step for strong performers.

It's not.

Management requires:

  • Role clarity

  • Professional capability

  • Structured preparation

Foundation First provides that preparation.

These are skills. And skills can be developed.
Our Core Beliefs:

  • Confidence comes from clarity and competence, not personality

  • Avoiding people conversations causes more harm than having them

  • Clarity is kinder than unchecked repetition

  • Readiness must come before advanced leadership development

  • First-time managers deserve professional preparation, not trial-and-error learning

Who Foundation First Is For

Primary Audience:

First-time managers and supervisors in finance and accounting who are:

  • Promoted for technical excellence

  • Managing former peers

  • Lacking formal management training

  • Seeking structured preparation, not motivational platitudes

We Serve:

  • Public accounting professionals (senior accountants → managers/supervisors)

  • Corporate finance professionals (analysts → managers, controllers)

  • Organizations that value proactive development over reactive remediation

Both women and men.

All career stages.

One shared need: professional preparation for a professional role.

The Vision

Foundation First is designed to become the recognized manager readiness platform for finance and accounting professionals across North America.

Current Focus:

Building proof of concept, refining curriculum, and serving early cohorts with excellence.

Future Vision:

  • Scalable delivery model

  • Potential certification pathway

  • Expansion to other technical professions

  • A transferable, sustainable business built on genuine impact

Built intentionally. Built to last.
